Full Review

Sometimes it is the one who loves you who hurts you the most.

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.

As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.

Jordan:

This is just one of those books that completely transforms you and makes you see something in a completely new light. In this case, it was abusive relationships.

I’m going to be honest: before reading this book, I didn’t know much about domestic violence at all; I assumed, like I’m sure most people do, that most of the time it’s a pretty black and white situation, because how could you love the person who hurts you, right?

Yeah. This book took that view and flipped it upside down with Lily’s story. My heart broke over and over again, and I could feel Lily’s pain like someone had just physically hit me. The emotions in this book were so raw, so real, and that’s the biggest reason I’ve been recommending this book non-stop since it was first recommended to me. Not because of the characters that you will no doubt fall in love with; not even because of the absolutely flawless writing; but because of the impact this book will have on you.

It’s just a novel you have to read, because Lily’s is a voice you have to hear.

Little warning: this book is not young adult like most of the books Zoe and I review, so there definitely is adult content throughout.

Zoe:

This novel was extremely heart-wrenching, and the development of the characters was very well done. This isn't a book that is meant to blow you away or leave you wanting to transport yourself into its world. This book is meant to inform the reader about the truth behind domestic violence, and the emotions at its core. It's a subtle shock that resonates quietly inside your heart for months after you have finished reading it. It's the progression and relationships that are formed, that you become attached to and learn to love just like Lily, that make this novel so amazing. I was constantly thinking about the novel, about the changes that both gradually happen and the ones that happen in a matter of seconds. This story really makes you ponder life, time, the choices we make, and the impact those decisions have on ourselves, others, and the future in general. This isn't just a page turner. This is raw and pure life. I recommend everyone, (and I mean EVERYONE), to read this amazing, life altering novel.

Make sure to come back next Wednesday for a new review!

Xoxo,

Jordan & Zoe
