Full Review

When geek girl Elle Wittimer sees a cosplay contest sponsored by the producers of Starfield, she has to enter. First prize is an invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. Elle’s been scraping together tips from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck behind her stepmother’s back, and winning this contest could be her ticket out once and for all—not to mention a fangirl’s dream come true.

Teen actor Darien Freeman is less than thrilled about this year’s ExcelsiCon. He used to live for conventions, but now they’re nothing but jaw-aching photo sessions and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Federation Prince Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the diehard Starfield fandom has already dismissed him as just another heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, closet nerd Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise. (Summary from Goodreads)

This book is the book every fangirl and fanboy DREAMS of reading. Centered on passion for fiction and fandom, it’s a story so many of us book lovers can relate to, and I adored every second of the 4 or so hours it took me to read this.

I fell in love with ALL the characters (except the stepmother and Chloe of course because EW how could anyone??). Darien was just so cute and adorable and dorky and GOSH WHY DO ALL THESE AUTHORS HAVE TO RAISE MY STANDARDS SO RIDICULOUSLY HIGH. He wasn’t perfect (which was why I loved him), and I absolutely adored how much Starfield meant to him.

And Elle. I could relate to her on a spiritual level when it came to her love for fandom and fictional characters, and I admired her strength, determination, and passion. She was a main character that was extraordinary while also being completely ordinary, and Poston did an absolutely fantastic job creating a realistic and 3-dimensional character you’ll inevitably care about from the beginning.

The plot was lightning-fast, and my favorite part was that there was always something going on. One of the reasons I got through this book so quickly was that there was never a dull moment, and watching the classic Cinderella story unfold in such a different setting was so, so cool.

Overall, although there was a little bit of insta-love, this book was just such a fun read. It made my little fangirl heart so ridiculously happy even though I’ve never cosplayed, and I’m a sucker for retellings so I can’t express enough how much I loved seeing this incredibly unique twist on Cinderella’s story play out in a contemporary setting.
